HPC / Z-Air innovation supplies service vehicles with compressed air – TEMPEST® on the road

Service vehicles depend on compressed air for a whole range of on-the-road repairs. Yet when these vehicles are loaded down with tires and other recovery equipment, it’s often difficult to find room for the compressor itself. HPC – Holland Perslucht Centrum b.v. from Rotterdam in the Netherlands – solved this problem with the help of Gardner Denver TEMPEST®.

"For years now, our customers have been crying out for a compact compressor system which can deliver enough air to drive a one-inch impact wrench," says Paul van Emmerik, Unit Manager of HPC.

"As most vehicles have diesel engines, it’s possible to use this energy to drive the compressor. However, the cost of these compressor systems is higher than that of conventional compressors, such as diesel-driven mobile or base-mounted ones. What’s more, in the case of road-service vehicles, the compressor system has to be built on the vehicle itself, which is very labor intensive," explains Paul van Emmerik.

An ear to the ground for market needs

When its customers describe what they need, Zeevenhooven Air listens. In response to just such needs, the company has already supplied vehicle-driven compressors based on a PTO gearbox installed in the drive line.

"As it turned out, the PTO gearbox wasn’t robust enough for heavy-duty use. This particular system also affected the truck design and resulted in warranty problems. So it was obvious that we needed a new compressor system which wouldn’t disturb the drive line. An additional challenge involved seeing just how much power we could get out of the PTO, as a compressor is such a large power consumer," Paul van Emmerik points out.
